Job Responsibilities:

• This position requires the application of technical principles in the fields of mechanical engineering, advanced machining, and precision metrology. Aspects of this position include developing experimental plans based on customer requirements, working with advanced machine tools and measurement equipment, generating CNC code to control machine tool and measurement equipment, developing supportive fixtures to help with process improvements, analyzing data and its effects on process parameters with the overall goal to advance emerging technologies, writing technical reports, independently and accurately organizing and tracking test data, and conducting formal presentations to plant personnel and other interested parties.

Job Requirements:

• Acts as a leader, advisor, or consultant as required for machining and metrology related topics and processes.
• Is able to independently generate CNC programs and troubleshoot programs both on the programming computer and at the machine tool or measurement instrument.
• Participate in the development, research, and/or design of new types of proposed improvements in transition technology material processing and while conforming to mandatory requirements.
• Utilize and/or interpret results from various computer programs including but not limited to: SolidWorks, Creo, MATLAB, ESPRIT, and Excel.
• Recommend improvements in guiding documentation, technology utilization and automation, and analyze impact of mission changes on design or engineering concepts of assigned programs.
• Present technical papers on material maturation at Y-12, to stakeholders at design agencies, and contractors as required to ensure effective and necessary technical cooperation at all levels that result in completion of assigned objectives.

Qualification & Experience:

• A mechanical engineering or physical science degree with a research background focused in the advanced machining and/or metrology disciplines is preferred.
• Experience with operating machining equipment (milling, drilling, turning, and grinding operations) that processes hazardous and/or radioactive materials is preferred.
