Job Description:
The Virginia Department of Forensic Science, Central Regional Laboratory, is seeking a qualified applicant to supervise a group of staff in the Toxicology section and its day-to-day operations, to include management of the section’s backlog and compliance to accreditation standards, state and Department procedures. The successful candidate will train and support examiner staff and independently perform comprehensive scientific analyses on a diversity of evidence submitted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and law enforcement agencies. This position uses state of the art knowledge of methodologies, techniques, and instrumentation related to the analysis of toxicological samples; interprets analytical results and prepares reports of findings; prepares court exhibits; and testifies in court as an expert witness. Occasional overnight travel is required and employee will provide own transportation as required.
Job Requirements:
- Ability to communicate effectively in a clear, concise manner, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to work independently, set priorities and work efficiently, keep accurate records, accurately analyze and interpret data, and develop conclusions
- Valid driver’s license and/or other means of reliable transportation
- Knowledge of ANAB (ASCLD/LAB) assessment requirements
Qualification & Experience:

Experience testifying in court as an expert in the field

Work experience in a forensic toxicology laboratory, to include successful completion of a documented training program and/or demonstration of competency

Demonstrated experience as a Forensic Scientist fully qualified in analyzing Toxicological samples and issuing Certificates of Analysis based on the findings

Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or forensic science

Experience with laboratory safety and quality assurance/quality control procedures
