Job Description:
This position is located with the Washington Office within Fire & Aviation Management & is responsible for developing & recommending aviation objectives, plans, policies, standards, & procedures for the full range of aviation programs in support of National Forest System resource management & protection activities.
Job Responsibilities:
- Participate in the implementation of national program policies and procedures in wildland fire suppression and resource management operations.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of guidelines and procedures, for the use of aircraft for Incident Awareness and Assessment activities.
- Develop, review, and analyze new or proposed aviation policies, procedures, and guidelines that impact a significant organizational segment of an agency.
- Support Forest Service and Interagency technology programs as they support aviation operations.
- Work with Interagency partners such as NASA, FAA, NOAA, and DoD to evaluate technologies that relate to aviation safety and technology enhancement.
- Evaluate and Implement of new or improved methods of utilizing aircraft for fire detection and suppression and analyzing aircraft capabilities in fire-connected missions.
- Advise the Washington Office about the aviation program and provides technological assistance to Forests within the Region; cooperating state organizations, county and medical agencies, and cooperating state and federal agencies.
- Assist in the development of Agency and Interagency technology based projects in support of the fire management mission, such as aerial ignition, reconnaissance, and aerial imagery.
- Develop new or revised policies, technical guides, and standards for use in field offices (e.g. develops new procedures or techniques for application to management problems within the state/forest).
- Provide technical and programmatic support for Aviation operations and safety in support of wildfire.
Job Requirements:
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required.
- Initial appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of training.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- This is a Test Designated Position. You will be tested for illegal drugs prior to appointment and randomly thereafter. Appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results.
- Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualification & Experience:
- Knowledge of fire and aviation management practices and principles.
- Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and manage work.
- Knowledge of policy and program development related to an aviation program.
- Knowledge of all phases of aviation planning for fire and land management programs.
- Ability to communicate other than in writing.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
