Job Description:

The Student Nurse Technician (SNT) provides a variety of nursing care duties in accordance with the duties, knowledge and skills identified in this functional statement. SNTs will be given opportunities to provide basic nursing care and procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the academic setting and validated by VA staff to provide care to patients/residents, and in accordance with established VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) policies

Job Responsibilities:

• Monitors and documents intake and output according to established procedures.
• Assures receipt of adequate nutritional intake either through observation of patient/resident or assisting the patient/resident with their nutritional needs, i.e., feeding the patient/resident.
• Recognizes the patient’s/resident’s autonomy and promotes independence by means of respect, limit setting, and individualized treatment.
• Observes patients/residents for overt or subtle changes in conditions and promptly reports changes to supervising Registered Nurse (RN), e.g., changes in behavior, mood, skin coloring, or appetite.
• Documents care given, observations, and responses on appropriate tools or forms.
• Contributes to the plan of care with the health care team
• Provides direct care for acute, long-term, perioperative, and psychiatric patients/residents according to established VAPORHCS policies and nursing procedures.

• Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.

Qualification & Experience:

• Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The GPA must be computed on post-secondary academic work taken within the past 3 years, or based on academic work accepted for credit towards the nursing degree.
• While a student may have a grade of “C” in a nursing course, the CGPA for the nursing core courses may not be less than a 3.0.
• Must be a United States citizen at time of entry into Nursing program
• Must be proficient in written and spoken English (English Language Proficiency)
