Job Description

Are you passionate about public health and creating healthier communities? Do you like working with diverse populations? The West Piedmont Health District ( WPHD ) is seeking one energetic person to join its Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children ( WIC ) team. The WPHD WIC Program currently serves Franklin County, Patrick County, Henry County and the City of Martinsville. This position will be based out of the Henry-Martinsville Health Department but will be required to travel between offices, mobile clinics, and outreach events. Duties in this position include the following: Interviews WIC participants to determine financial and categorical eligibility. Answers program questions, makes appropriate referrals to community resources, and explains WIC policies and procedures in detail. Schedules WIC appointments and compiles WIC reports. Provides secondary nutrition education to WIC enrolled clients. Performs anthropometric measurements (height, weight) and hemoglobin tests. Promotes breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding to all pregnant women and supports breastfeeding women.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; ability to communicate effectively with the general public; knowledge of basic clerical and business procedures; and knowledge of basic nutritional principles. Basic computer skills required. Must obtain Certification as a Competent Professional Authority ( CPA ) within 6 months of being hired (on-site training provided).

Preferred Qualifications

Some college level training. Ability to speak and write in Spanish. Prior work experience in a medical setting.

Special Requirements

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. The selected candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable (Va. Code

2.2-3114). Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel ( HCP ) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination.

Local and out of state travel including overnight stay, may be required from time to time to attend conferences, meetings, training, coverage, and professional development. May require some weekend and/or evening hours.

A valid State Driver’s License if required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.
