Job Description:

Habitat Management to Minimize the Impacts of Fire: Perform routine work and general manual labor involved with day-to-day operations to lessen the impacts of fire on Department lands. Remove trees, shrubs, and other vegetation with aid of chainsaws, weedwhackers and other tools, create fuel breaks along sheds, roads and other infrastructure. Build and replace (burned) barbed wire fences with wildlife friendly fencing, install gates. Conduct other fencing and general wildlife area maintenance activities. Help restore areas previous burned. Work on water development for wildlife and grazing programs and control noxious weed species (may include herbicide spraying and controlled burns, use of chainsaws, weedwhackers, pole saws, chippers, and backpack sprayers).

Job Responsibilities:

  • Equipment Operation/Facilities Maintenance: Assist in maintaining and repairing equipment used for drought resilience, vehicle and equipment operation (including tractors, heavy equipment, trucks Utility Terrain Vehicles, and hand tools). Assist with construction, carpentry, plumbing, and painting to maintain buildings, grounds and facilities. Assist with infrastructure maintenance and repair activities on ponds, levees, pumps, fish screens, and roads; water management; water quality management; habitat improvement; noxious weed species control; vehicle and equipment fleet maintenance; building fences, gates, corrals, parking lots, culverts, artificial watering devices, access roads, levees, boundary and interpretive signs.

Job Requirements:

  • Good communication skills; ability to work with a small team of people for entire field season. Physical strength and agility; ability to lift 40 pounds; ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five (5) minutes.

  • This is a non-testing Classification, therefore, anyone meeting the Minimum Qualifications listed on the Classification Specification may apply for this position. Individuals in specific programs, such as the Welfare to Work Program, are encouraged to apply and will be given priority according to the applicable Laws and Rules.   • Good driving record; additional course work or experience in biological or environmental sciences; interest in a career in biology or fish and wildlife. Demonstrated knowledge of, interest in, and aptitude for fish and wildlife conservation and repair and maintenance work; willingness to live and work throughout the State; willingness to work unusual hours and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays; willingness to perform varied manual tasks; willingness to work in adverse weather conditions; willingness to wear a prescribed uniform. General understanding of building fences or willingness to learn, general construction knowledge how to use power tools. Ability to use handheld Global Positioning System. Microsoft Office software. Chainsaw certification and general understanding of fire science and certified wildlands first aid.
