Job Responsibilities:

Under supervision of the WHL Supervisor and lead guidance of the Senior Wildlife Veterinarian (Specialist), the position is responsible for monitoring endangered Amargosa voles, their habitat, and implementing conservation and recovery actions during drought. Working with project partners this position conducts conservation and restoration field work for Amargosa vole projects including trapping, handling and collecting biological samples from wild Amargosa voles; placing and checking remotely triggered cameras for wildlife photographic surveys; ecological monitoring of marshes and implementing marsh restoration activities (e.g., planting vegetation by hand, performing plant species counts, measuring soil saturation with piezometers); and recording field data into field notebooks.

Additional responsibilities include caring for Amargosa voles at the captive breeding facility (e.g., husbandry tasks, maintaining health records); assisting with translocations and release; and monitoring survival of animals via telemetry and trapping after releases. General duties include transport of samples, carcasses, data, equipment, and live animals; performing inventory, cleaning, organizing, and maintenance of equipment and field vehicles.

Office setting requires using computer keyboard at least several hours a day and involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Field activities may include strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions. Ability to lift items up to 40 lbs. Possession of a valid driver license required. Ability to wear a uniform, as appropriate. In addition to working with Sacramento-based staff, may interact with Regional staff and members of the public, in the field, via e-mail and telephone. Willingness to work long irregular hours, if needed to meet program needs, and to travel in performing field work throughout the State.
