Job Description:
Under direction, leads, oversees, reviews and performs work activities and duties assigned to the landscape and grounds maintenance crews; supervises the repair, maintenance, modification, and upkeep of park and publicly owned grounds, playground equipment, and structures, recreation areas, mall areas, public housing and facility grounds, median traffic islands, and related facilities; assumes responsibility for the more difficult and complex tasks; develops and schedules staff training programs; performs related duties as required.
Job Responsibilities:
- Leads, oversees, reviews, and performs the work of staff responsible for maintenance, repair, modification, and upkeep of municipal parks, recreation facilities, mall areas, median traffic islands, housing, and public facility grounds and playground areas.
- Purchases supplies and materials.
- Coordinates the training of lower-level personnel in the areas of work; ensures adherence to safe work methods, procedures, and practices; identifies training opportunities and needs.
- Evaluates assigned work projects; estimate time, materials, and equipment necessary for successful completion of the project; acquires necessary resources as is appropriate.
- Coordinates, monitors and inspects landscape work performed by contractors; serves as liaison with Landscape Assessment District
- Homeowners Associations; provides technical input, recommendations, and inspection services to program architects.
- Maintains plantings and grounds, playground equipment and structures; installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems and controllers; schedules fertilizing, spraying, and planting activities; applies or supervises the application of herbicides and pesticides; performs preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment, tools, and related safety equipment; supervises custodial work for public park facilities; oversees the work of crews involved in graffiti removal.
- Schedules and pre-inspects work to be performed; communicates assignments to crew leaders and performs on-site inspection of work; ensures the implementation of traffic control measures at job sites if required; maintains records of program activity, materials used, and employee
- schedules and time records; works with supervisor to establish and monitor performance goals for employees; coordinates program activities with other City departments, agencies or organizations as required.
- Responds to questions and concerns from the general public regarding landscape and grounds maintenance practices; provides information as appropriate and resolves service concerns.
Job Requirements:
- Possess the equivalent of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in landscape and grounds maintenance, including one (1) year of experience in the supervision of grounds maintenance operations.
- Possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training courses.
- A California Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate must be acquired within one (1) year of employment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid class C California driver’s license.
- Must be able to speak and understand English to effectively communicate with fellow employees, customers, and vendors.
