Job Description:
Under general supervision, the Transit Operator operates a transit bus on specified fixed routes with prescribed time schedules. Employee is responsible to provide safe, dependable and on-time transportation services to the public in a courteous and friendly manner. The transit operator must strictly adhere to all applicable state and local traffic laws and regulations, and City ordinances, safety rules, policies and procedures to ensure the well being of all passengers.
Job Responsibilities:

Treats passengers with courtesy and respect.

Ensures passengers are accommodated prior to putting vehicle into motion.

Operates wheelchair lift and assists disabled passengers in boarding, riding, and alighting in a safe manner; Announces major street intersections and assists visually impaired passengers as needed.

Obey all state and local traffic laws.

Comply with all City ordinances, safety rules, policies, and procedures, and follows all departmental safety rules, policies, and procedures.
Position requires safely operating and driving a public transit bus in all types of weather, traffic, emergency or hazardous situations or conditions. Job may include shift, evening, weekend, holiday, split or other work schedule. -
Thoroughly inspects and performs pre-trip and post-trip daily bus and equipment inspections.

Report hazardous and dangerous conditions along bus routes and at passenger stops, and reports vandalism or graffiti that may be in buses or bus stops.

Drives bus route assignment in a safe and dependable manner maintaining time schedules and not deviating from the route or making stops without proper authorization.

Accurately collects fares and ensures that proper fares are deposited into farebox.

Checks passenger documents for proper passenger identification cards.

Reports any mechanical problems, body damage, items left on the bus, and incidents that occur on the current route or current shift as soon as possible on that same day.

Report delays in scheduled arrival to dispatcher.

Provides friendly customer information about public transit schedules, routes, and fares, and other City services using tact and diplomacy.

Provides passenger assistance as needed.
Job Requirements:
- Employee must have considerable knowledge of passenger transport observing safe-driving practices at all times; and be able to effectively communicate with the public in a courteous tactful manner.
- Employee must be dependable, punctual, and neat in appearance.
- Job requires a valid Texas CDL Class B driver’s license with Passenger endorsement. The City may consider hiring candidate as a Paratransit
- Operator at a rate of $13.7473/hr if candidate lacks Texas CDL with Passenger endorsement, but successfully completes required driving training and obtains a Texas CDL with Passenger endorsement within two weeks of starting driving training. Once a Texas-issued CDL with Passenger endorsement is obtained, the candidate may transition to a Transit Operator position at $15.1563/hr.
- Employee must be able to read City map to locate off-route passenger pick-ups.
- Job requires successful completion of a two weeks of training
- Job requires employee to be bilingual in English and Spanish.
- An accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent is preferred.
Qualification & Experience:
- Job requires one (1) year professional driving experience. Previous experience driving a large passenger vehicle is preferred.
