Job Description:
Under general supervision, the Water Lab Technician performs routine physical, chemical, analytical, and bacteriological analysis on water at all stages of collection, processing, treatment, and distribution for the McAllen Public Utilities as required by Federal, State, and Local Regulations. Employee prepares and submits recurring reports and records of all water analysis, which require analytical interpretation.
Job Responsibilities:

Interacts with lab staff and other city departments regarding water analyses.

Prepares daily/monthly reports and maintains records and databases of samples collected and analyzed.

Utilizes lab spectrophotometers, total dissolved solids/conductivity meters, turbidity meters, pH meters, thermometers, and appropriate tools to complete daily tasks.

Utilizes lab Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as required by the McAllen Water Lab.

Utilizes established procedures and policy relating to the department’s personnel manual.

Utilizes standard operation procedures required by The NELAC Institute (TNI), Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ), Texas

Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and the Environmental Protecting Agency (EPA) in order to perform drinking water analyses.

Interacts and assists with citizens of the City of McAllen in order to resolve questions and concerns associated with drinking water quality.

Collects raw and treated water samples at various locations throughout the city including the water treatment plants and performs physical, chemical, analytical and bacteriological water analyses.

Utilizes lab chemicals, microbial cultures, a variety of lab glassware and equipment for the completion of water analyses.

Performs a variety of instrument calibrations and quality control processes.

Interacts with other city departments in order to facilitate source and application efficiencies.

Utilizes the Quality System as required by TNI.

Utilizes the Health and Safety Program as required by state and federal regulations.

Utilizes lab instrumentation such as the Ion Chromatograph system and Total Organic Carbon analyzer to perform analytical water analyses.
Job Requirements:

Job requires a valid TCEQ Surface Water Treatment Operator Level “D” certification or must be able to obtain within one year from hire, subsequently, the TCEQ Surface Water Treatment Operator Level “C” certification within one year once eligible.

Job requires a current, valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license.
Job requires an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent. -
Must have a customer friendly attitude and professional appearance at all times.

Must be capable of multi-tasking and working in a fast-pace environment.

Application of clear concise oral and written communication skills to prepare reports, document lab results, and maintain lab logs and records.

Application of good knowledge of utilizing computer hardware, software and peripherals to maintain lab records and databases.

Application of good knowledge of utilizing mathematical formulas and measurements.

Job requires one (1) year of work related experience, with knowledge of science preferred.
Qualification & Experience:
