Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Graphic Designer will work on a variety of products and activities, requiring a creative flair, designing visual concepts for communicating ideas with an up-to-date knowledge of industry software.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (

)
  • Work with Principal Designer to understand objectives, audience, schedule and other related issues regarding the requested material
  • Determine the message the design should portray
  • Plans, creates, and presents one or more design concepts which includes selecting colors, photographs or other graphics, appropriate paper stock, and development of printing specifications.
  • Review work with Principal Designer to ensure quality and suitability of finished work as defined by the original work order.
  • Confers with supervisors, publicists, and representatives of the client department to understand objectives, audience, schedule and other related issues regarding the requested materials, such as brochures, pamphlets, posters, charts, advertisements, logos, reports, publications, exhibits and videos.
  • Reviews work of subordinates to ensure quality and suitability of finished work as defined by budget limitations and the original work order.
  • Informs supervisors and colleagues of work in progress.
  • Ensures that vendors meet departmental quality standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with specialization in commercial art or graphic design.

One (1) year of experience in the design and production of communication and promotional materials.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of graphic software such as Adobe Creative Suite (In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
  • Knowledge of a variety of artistic techniques and media.
  • Skill in techniques and applications of computer graphics)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to be creative in dealing with limited budgets.
  • Ability to interact effectively with colleagues and vendors.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:

Employees in this class may be required to provide and operate a motor vehicle on a reimbursed mileage basis; valid State of Michigan Driver license required.

Physical Demands

Occasionally may be required to lift, carry and place supplies or quantities of printed pieces weighing up to 30 lbs.

Evaluation Plan
  • Written Exam (CBT): 35%
  • Interview: 50%
  • Evaluation of Training, Experience, & Personal Qualifications (T.E.P.): 15%
Additional points may be awarded for:
  • Detroit Residency Credit: 15 Points
  • Veteran Points: 0-15 Points
