Job Description And Duties

In accordance with Governor Newsom’s Executive Order N-33-20 and, as a result of the COVID-19 rapid out-break, Caltrans will continue its hiring practices as they are deemed necessary to “maintain continuity of operations of the federal critical infrastructure…,” Candidates who participate in the interview process will be considered essential in promoting this effort and are not in violation of Executive Order N-33-20. Under the direction and supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer, the Transportation Engineer performs activities requiring engineering knowledge and management skills for the preparation of plans, specifications, estimates, design drawings, written documents, presentations, and other related work for transportation projects. The main purpose of the duties is to be a premier engineering team delivering transportation projects for our project stakeholders and regional partners. In addition to the Department’s values, we consider safety, efficiency, cost, quality, sustainability, environmental protection, aesthetics, and community values in all of the products we design. Ensures during the development of projects, the consideration, and when appropriate, the implementation of Smart Mobility and Complete Streets components, towards the Department’s Mission to provide a safe and reliable transportation network that serves all people and respects the environment.

Incumbent may be assigned by Supervisor to be a Lead-worker to train, direct, and manage the work of other staff within assigned branch.

As incumbent progresses in experience, assignments will increase from average to high difficulty. Transportation Engineer (Civil) Range D requires registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California.

This is a full-time permanent position.

Special Requirements

A valid CA Professional Engineering License (Civil) is required for Range D appointment.
This position(s) may require medical and/or audio clearance prior to being hired.
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

Candidates that believe they meet the minimum qualifications based on a pattern of education from the classification description (specifications) must provide a copy of their degree, transcripts, license, and/or certificate, along with the State application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position. If selected for the position in which education is required to meet the minimum qualifications, official sealed transcripts will be required prior to appointment.
