Job Description:
You will function as a Maintenance Worker with the Army Corps of Engineers District, Huntington Regional Rivers Repair Fleet, Heavy Capacity Fleet Unit, duty location Louisville, KY, performing a wide variety of Maintenance Worker duties involved in operations, maintenance and repair of facilities, equipment, structures, building, and grounds, which requires the use of various trade practices.
Job Responsibilities:
- Direct the making and breaking of tows from the pilothouse or bridge. Is required to land vessel and/or tows in close quarters of a harbor or alongside other floating plant.
- Assists with general maintenance and housekeeping duties to ensure the vessel is kept clean and organized at all times.
- Receives oral or written instructions pertaining to plant, equipment, materials, and supplies to be moved or other missions for which vessel is utilized
- Conduct pilot’s watch with the responsibility for the overall operation of the vessel and safety of the plant and personnel while on watch.
- Steer the vessel from the pilot house using pilot house controls for proper speed and direction considering factors such as river currents, direction and velocity of wind, depth of water, size of tow, and capacity and maneuverability of the vessel.
- Participates in and occasionally conducts safety meetings and drills to ensure all assigned crew are trained and proficient in responding to vessel emergencies.
- Operate controls governing navigation of the vessel and its tow.
Job Requirements:
- Requires considerable standing, stooping, and bending; works from ladders and scaffolds requiring prolonged overhead work or working in cramped or awkward positions.
- Must take a pre-employment physical.
- Requires climbing vertical ladders of up to 100 feet in height; frequently lifts, positions, and carries items such as bricks, block, stone, mortar, cement, and sand weighing from 50 to 100 pounds.
- Must take a pre-employment and random drug test.
- Uses safety equipment such as hearing and eye protection, PFDs, hard hats, hard toe shoes, safety belts, respirators, protective clothing and other personal protective equipment.
- Incumbent is subject to falls, drowning, injury, discomfort, hazardous atmospheres and loud noises.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state-issued motor vehicle driver’s license.
- Requires working outside during the day or night subject to inclement weather and extreme temperature variations, on high structures usually over water.
